Nichola

Hello, I’m Nicki, a PhD in Literature with over 20 years’ Secondary English teaching experience, and 13 years’ experience as a tutor. I’m also a published and prize-winning poet whose work has been described by Carol Ann Duffy as ‘sophisticated and lyrical.’ I have huge enthusiasm for my subject which I aim to share with my students, helping them to foster their own confidence, dedication and creativity.

I have taught English from 11-18 since 2005 in the state sector and have successfully tutored students from both private and state schools, as well as tutoring home-schooled students who have struggled within the education system. I have also coached students in preparation for entrance examinations to such schools as Latymer Upper and Rugby. Earlier in my career, I was Teaching Fellow in Romantic Literature at the University of St Andrews and have also taught at the University of Worcester. I have published a number of academic articles and book-chapters on Romantic Literature. I have taught creative writing for The Poetry School to adult learners.

At school and online, my teaching has been recognised as outstanding. To give you an idea of my approach and skill-level, one parent of a tutee has written about me:

“Nicki has been helping my son who is in Year 10. My son struggles with concentration as he has ADD (first spotted by Nicki) but he really enjoys his lessons with her. She is an excellent English teacher anyway but what makes her so brilliant is that she knows how to manage tuition sessions so that he understands things and keeps focused. Lessons are never boring. Nicki has gone above and beyond with research on how she can help us and she is constantly finding new learning techniques which all her students benefit from. We feel very lucky to have found Nicki. “

I also act as a mentor to trainee teachers within my department. I have real depth of subject-knowledge, which I am constantly endeavouring to expand. I believe that real success in this and every subject comes from reading and developing reading skills. I model the joys of reading and creativity in everything I teach.

Teaching Experience

• Over 20 years’ classroom experience, teaching English from KS3 to A-Level.

• 13 years as a tutor, teaching all prior attainment levels.

• Teaching at GCSE includes AQA, Pearson 2.0 and Cambridge and Pearson IGCSE.

• At A-Level, I have taught AQA A and AQA B Literature, Pearson, OCR, AQA Language and Literature.

• Teaching undergraduates and postgraduates at St Andrews, Manchester and Worcester Universities.

• Teaching Creative Writing at the Poetry School.

• Subject mentor to trainee teachers.

• Excellent success with SEND students (ASD, ADHD, Dyslexia) achieving above predicted grades.

• I have successfully coached several students through Oxford University applications for Literature .

Tutoring Approach

Enthusiasm and love of my subject inform my approach. Students are treated very much as individuals, and I try to tailor what I teach around their interests, strengths and areas for development. I find texts as stimuli that are appropriate to their needs; I find approaches to examination material that are manageable, challenging, easy to remember and fun.

I teach writing and examination strategies that work but I also encourage emotional intelligence and use the best educational research to encourage students not only to work hard but to work smarter and to assimilate their learning without ‘burnout.’

Feedback to students is always detailed and precise and I always enjoy seeing students incorporate effective, new approaches. I aim never to set a ceiling on anyone’s achievement. I consistently help my students to be mentally methodical, focused and highly ambitious.

Nicki has been working with my daughter who is in year 10. My daughter enjoys the sessions and is now feeling much more confident in how to answer questions in her English Lit GCSE. Nicki is excellent at providing feedback and working with my daughter on the things she needs support on. Thank you!

Tutor response

Many thanks for the feedback -- it's great to see your daughter making such strong progress!

My son has greatly benefited from his GCSE English tutoring. The tutor is knowledgeable, patient, and explains concepts in a way that is easy to understand. Since starting lessons, his confidence in both English Language and English Literature has improved significantly. The sessions are well-organized, engaging, and focused on exam techniques as well as subject knowledge. We are very pleased with his progress and would highly recommend this tutor to any student preparing for their GCSE exams.

Tutor response

Many thanks for your kind comments! Your son was a pleasure to teach and had a really positive approach to learning!

Nicki taught my son English - he took his GCSE 2 years ago. He went from Grade 3 to Grade 7 in English Language and received an award for the most improved in his year from the English department! Needless to say when my daughter was in need of help we asked Nicki again – my daughter's school tests and mocks have been consistently improving. She's gained confidence and I've no doubt that all of this is due to Nicki, I fully expect my daughter to do well in her GCSE too. Not only have we seen the improvements in grades, but Nicki is patient and calm, extremely knowledgeable and both my children got on very well with her, which hasn't always been the case with tutors. I highly recommend Nicki, she's the perfect tutor!

Tutor response

Thanks so much for this! I have really enjoyed working with both your children and have really appreciated their dedication to learning!

Nicki tutored my son for a couple of years and I feel really glad that we found her! I honestly cannot say enough about how brilliant she was over this time. My son had struggled to engage with education previously and she was patient, intuitive and great at coming alongside him and teaching at a pace and in a way which worked for him. I cannot recommend her highly enough!

Tutor response

Nicki has just started helping my son in Year 10 with his English GCSE work, not a subject that he has a great deal of enthusiasm for. However, in just a couple of lessons, her calm, sensible approach, excellent knowledge, and creative teaching skills have made a significant impact on his learning experience. Nicki has started to change the way that he sees the subject but also and maybe more importantly, the way he sees himself and his own capabilities. We are so happy we have found such excellent support for our son in his learning journey. Many thanks Nicki!

Tutor response

Thanks so much, Vanessa! It's always wonderful to get positive feedback like this, and it's a pleasure to be able to help! Nicki

Nicola was an excellent tutor and gave me much greater confidence in my language ability. She approaches tutoring in a constructive way which taught me to think for myself and look at concepts from different perspectives. She reminded me to try and love what I was learning which made the already stressful process of A Levels much more enjoyable. I felt confident going into my exams and would highly recommend Nicola to anyone looking for help with their exams. -Sophie.

Tutor response

Many thanks for your generous comments, Sophie, and all the best for your future endeavours! Every good wish, Nicki
