In early May 2026, the First Tutors UK website began displaying a closure notice stating the company had "made the difficult decision to close" after more than 20 years of trading. No official reason has been published.

First Tutors now provides a self-service Privacy Center at privacy.firsttutors.com/portal where tutors can download their full account data — including reviews, messages, student details, and more. If the Privacy Center doesn't work for your account, you can fall back to emailing dpo@firsttutors.co.uk.

I'm Henry, a Maths and Science tutor who relied on First Tutors for over 15 years. I'm also a developer with experience running platforms that serve millions of users. When it became clear that First Tutors might not return, I decided to build a successor, because there are no real alternatives out there.

I already run StudyDex, a platform for past papers and progress tracking. Now that First Tutors is confirmed to be gone, I'm building a tutor marketplace alongside StudyDex called TutorDex. All my efforts are now dedicated to making TutorDex a worthy replacement.

My goal is for TutorDex to become as large, if not larger, than First Tutors ever was, but in a sustainable way. We'll use the same finder's fee model, with optional tutor subscriptions, to fund the platform. More importantly, I will work closely with the tutor community. Major decisions will be made together, because this is a community effort.

TutorDex is rolling out in phases. Here's where we are:

1. Done — Profile creation and public search. Tutors can set up profiles, subjects, locations, and rates. Students can search and browse.
2. Done — First Tutors review import. Import your reviews via the Privacy Center data export or Web Archive links. Imported reviews feed the search algorithm.
3. Done — Messaging system. Handling payments so parents can purchase a tutor's contact details.
4. Done — Import references, old requests, so that you can invite your old FT students to join TutorDex and leave you a review.
5. Coming next — DBS uploading

You don't start from zero on TutorDex. Import your full First Tutors history — reviews, references, students, and old tuition requests — and your verified reviews will actively feed the search algorithm. Your legacy acts as a multiplier for your visibility.
