Tutor Profile

Catherine

Private English and English Literature Tutor in Aylesbury

With 20 years of tutoring experience, I hold a PhD, Masters, and First Class Degree in English from UCL (Dean's List, English Dept Medal, Faculty Medal) and came top of my year. I was also an A-Level specialist examiner for one of the major examining boards for five years and am a former fellow at UCL, ranked among the top 10 universities globally.

  • 20 years of private English tutoring experience preparing students for their examinations and elevating grades.
  • Every year I have many students successfully achieve Oxbridge entrance, with 99% of students also placing at Russell Group universities.
  • I am well-versed in all the major examination boards and their current requirements (OCR, Edexcel, AQA).
  • I currently lecture on two Masters programmes but tutor privately in my spare time.
  • I am very flexible and able to offer online sessions both during the day and in after-school hours/weekends.

Teaching Experience

Although I have lectured at some of the UK's top institutions, I have a down-to-earth approach to my tutoring sessions and enjoy sharing my passion for literature and English with students of all abilities and backgrounds.

As a former English A-Level examiner, I have a keen understanding of what examiners are looking for, and how to get students there.

My private tutoring work spans GCSE and A-Level English preparation, university dissertation supervision across a broad range of humanities subjects, and support for adult learners who want to develop their love of literature.

I pride myself on the rapport I build with students and their families, many of whom work with me across both their school and university studies over many years.

Tutoring Approach

I craft a curriculum specifically designed for each student's needs and progress — no one-size-fits-all approach. This is bespoke tutoring informed by decades of experience as both a tutor and a lecturer.

I teach exclusively online, offering regular sessions to fit around your schedule as well as intensive pre-exam sessions for students looking for last-minute support or resit preparation. I am also happy to work with home-schooled students and can offer flexible daytime availability alongside the more traditional after-school and evening slots.

I blend exam practice, close reading, thematic exploration, and detailed feedback in my sessions. As a former A-Level specialist examiner, I make sure students understand exactly what it takes to achieve the highest grades, with model answers, revision notes, and past paper practice throughout.

Feedback (from past students):

Tailored and effective: I am noted for tailoring tuition to individual needs and helping students make "astounding personal progress," often elevating grades significantly.

Engaging and caring: I am described as "warm" and "caring," with the ability to connect with students of all ages and abilities. Parents describe me as "reliable, punctual, and disciplined in her approach."

Results-oriented: parents report that their children become more independent and confident in their work.

Catherine supported my daughter throughout her A Level English Literature studies and exam preparation, and we are extremely grateful for all the help and guidance she provided. She was immensely helpful in developing my daughter’s knowledge of the subject, as well as strengthening her exam technique and confidence. Catherine’s advice extended beyond the syllabus too, including thoughtful and valuable discussions around university, which my daughter found very helpful. My daughter thoroughly enjoyed her lessons with Catherine and always felt supported and encouraged. Catherine created a positive learning environment, offering clear explanations, constructive feedback, and well-planned tasks that helped my daughter make real progress. My daughter has also shared the following feedback: “Catherine helped me to understand and break down each aspect of my paper, focusing carefully on each Assessment Objective so that I could maximise my marks. She gave very effective feedback on practice essays and organised extremely helpful lesson tasks, such as practising unseen extracts and breaking down the method for strong unseen analysis. She was also incredibly supportive and helpful with my coursework. She was very ethical and fair in the support she gave me.” We would wholeheartedly recommend Catherine as a tutor. She is knowledgeable, supportive, professional, and genuinely committed to helping her students succeed.

Catherine tutored me for AQA A-level English in the run up to exams as an independent candidate aiming for an A*. I have nothing but good things to say in this review. She was able to identify and improve my weaknesses, rather than waste time on extraneous materials. She was always very quick to get back to me and flexible if I needed to change lessons. Having Catherine as a tutor meant I walked into exams with the confidence I had done everything I could to put my best foot forward. I can see a stark improvement in my essays before the exam in comparison to those I wrote before she took me on as a student. Not only do have I improved as an A-level student, but as an independent reader of literature. These lessons have helped me in understanding and analysing literature outside of exams in a way that I feel will be very helpful for university. As someone with quite a lot of exam anxiety, I also appreciated how understanding and accommodating she was with this. Her advice was practical and sympathetic, and definitely helped a lot.

My daughter has loved Catherine as her English tutor and the sessions have made a significant difference in her understanding of what it takes to do well at A-level as opposed to GCSE. Catherine is very professional and quick to respond to requests. We will definitely ask her to work with our son if he chooses English as one of his A-levels.

Tutor response

Many thanks. It has been a pleasure to work with your daughter!

Catherine helped our daughter enormously when preparing for her A level in English literature. She was a strong student and held an offer from Cambridge to study English, but was not confident that her school was covering the material thoroughly enough to get her to the high grades she needed to be accepted onto her course. Catherine was very helpful in identifying areas where there were shortfalls in her preparation in school, both in terms of the texts covered and in the techniques needed to answer questions well, and guided her through the reading and practice needed to fill the gaps. Catherine offered constructive criticism our daughter felt she was not getting from her teachers, and the sessions overall greatly boosted her confidence in the run up to exams. We sincerely believe that Catherine’s support was essential to her getting the grade she needed and are pleased to say she is now thoroughly enjoying her course as a result.

I am so glad that I was able to help and assist your daughter to take up her place at Cambridge!

Catherine's been great in guiding my learning, ensuring that I feel confident, whilst also guiding me on how to improve my work. I always leave my lessons having learnt something. Her essay feedback has been equally helpful. She always responds to messages in good time and I would definitely reccommend her to anyone looking for an A-Level English tutor!
