Catherine

With 20 years of tutoring experience, I hold a PhD, Masters, and First Class Degree in English from UCL (Dean's List, English Dept Medal, Faculty Medal) and came top of my year. I was also an A-Level specialist examiner for one of the major examining boards for five years and am a former fellow at UCL, ranked among the top 10 universities globally.

  • 20 years of private English tutoring experience preparing students for their examinations and elevating grades.
  • Every year I have many students successfully achieve Oxbridge entrance, with 99% of students also placing at Russell Group universities.
  • I am well-versed in all the major examination boards and their current requirements (OCR, Edexcel, AQA).
  • I currently lecture on two Masters programmes but tutor privately in my spare time.
  • I am very flexible and able to offer online sessions both during the day and in after-school hours/weekends.

Teaching Experience

Although I have lectured at some of the UK's top institutions, I have a down-to-earth approach to my tutoring sessions and enjoy sharing my passion for literature and English with students of all abilities and backgrounds.

As a former English A-Level examiner, I have a keen understanding of what examiners are looking for, and how to get students there.

My private tutoring work spans GCSE and A-Level English preparation, university dissertation supervision across a broad range of humanities subjects, and support for adult learners who want to develop their love of literature.

I pride myself on the rapport I build with students and their families, many of whom work with me across both their school and university studies over many years.

Tutoring Approach

I craft a curriculum specifically designed for each student's needs and progress — no one-size-fits-all approach. This is bespoke tutoring informed by decades of experience as both a tutor and a lecturer.

I teach exclusively online, offering regular sessions to fit around your schedule as well as intensive pre-exam sessions for students looking for last-minute support or resit preparation. I am also happy to work with home-schooled students and can offer flexible daytime availability alongside the more traditional after-school and evening slots.

I blend exam practice, close reading, thematic exploration, and detailed feedback in my sessions. As a former A-Level specialist examiner, I make sure students understand exactly what it takes to achieve the highest grades, with model answers, revision notes, and past paper practice throughout.

Feedback (from past students):

Tailored and effective: I am noted for tailoring tuition to individual needs and helping students make "astounding personal progress," often elevating grades significantly.

Engaging and caring: I am described as "warm" and "caring," with the ability to connect with students of all ages and abilities. Parents describe me as "reliable, punctual, and disciplined in her approach."

Results-oriented: parents report that their children become more independent and confident in their work.
