Hi, I'm Toby. I am a Head of Classics with over 12 years of teaching experience, specialising in Latin and Classical Civilisation. Alongside my teaching, I run Mr Hinde's Classics Channel on YouTube, where I create resources and videos exploring the ancient world and supporting students' understanding of Classical topics.

Having studied Classics at school myself, I quickly developed a fascination with the ancient world, particularly its literature, mythology, history and culture, and I have been fortunate to build a career sharing that enthusiasm with students.

My aim as a tutor is to provide engaging, supportive and academically rigorous tuition that is tailored to each student's individual goals, whether that be improving confidence, mastering difficult topics, achieving top grades, or preparing for further study. Outside of Classics, I enjoy music, camping and exploring historical sites.

Due to my full-time role as Head of Classics, I accept a limited number of tutoring students each year, allowing me to provide highly personalised support and feedback.

I have over 12 years of experience teaching Latin and Classical Civilisation in secondary education and currently serve as Head of Classics. Throughout my career I have taught students from beginner level through to GCSE, A-Level and IB, helping them develop subject knowledge, confidence and examination skills.

In Latin, I have experience teaching all major exam boards, including OCR, WJEC and IB. I teach all aspects of the subject, including grammar, syntax, translation, literature, unseen translation, verse scansion and examination technique. I am also experienced in teaching Primary Latin using both the Minimus and Cambridge Latin Course programmes.

In Classical Civilisation, I teach OCR GCSE and A-Level specifications and have extensive experience with the following topics:

• GCSE: Mythology & Religion; Roman City Life
• A-Level: Greek Art; Greek Religion; Politics of the Late Republic

My approach to tutoring is structured, supportive and highly tailored to the individual student. I begin by identifying strengths and areas for development, then adapt lessons to focus on the specific skills required for success in examinations. In Latin, this includes grammar, syntax, vocabulary acquisition, translation skills and unseen translation practice. In Classical Civilisation, I focus on developing clear analytical writing, precise use of evidence and strong essay technique.

I place a strong emphasis on understanding exam requirements and teaching students how to approach questions strategically, not just content knowledge. Where appropriate, I also set targeted follow-up tasks to reinforce learning between sessions.

Lessons are typically 60 minutes in length, although longer sessions can be arranged where appropriate, particularly for exam preparation or intensive revision periods. Lessons are delivered online using Google Meet and Google Classroom, allowing resources, feedback and homework to be shared efficiently and securely.
