Teaching Experience

I have been teaching for over 15 years at secondary, sixth form, and university levels. At Warwick University, I have taught as an award-winning member of staff, winning the Warwick Award for Teaching Excellence (WATE) in 2022 and receiving a further nomination in 2024.

Alongside my academic teaching, I have worked as a university admissions tutor at a Russell Group university, supporting students through the application process with particular expertise in personal statements and Russell Group applications.

As a private tutor, I specialise in GCSE and A-Level English Language and Literature, and have a strong record of results. For example, In my 2022/23 intake, every student achieved their required grade, with all rising at least two grades from when they began working with me.

Tutoring Approach

I take a genuinely personalised approach to teaching, and I adjust how I work to suit each individual student. My own experiences as a learner have shaped how I think about the way young people develop and find their way into a subject. Every student is different, and what clicks for one person won't necessarily work for another.

My sessions tend to be relaxed and informal. I find that students do their best thinking when they don't feel like they're being tested every five minutes, so I try to create a space where wider ideas can breathe and where students feel comfortable enough to take risks with their thinking. A big part of what I do is helping students find their own voice and path into the material, rather than just handing them a formula to follow. Whilst foundational work is important, and included, it is when students feel like they are able to speak on the topic that they excel.

Nick is by far the best tutor my son has ever had, and he has worked with many tutors over the years in various subjects. In just a short period of time, Nick has helped him feel genuinely more confident in English. My son is truly happy to have extra lessons and actually looks forward to his sessions with Nick, which says everything about the quality of his teaching.

Thank you Nick for being such a wonderful tutor! T has not only learnt a lot but also thoroughly enjoys and even looks forward to her lessons! She has had several tutors from this site and Nick is her favourite! Cannot recommend highly enough, 11/10!

Nick is an engaging, interactive and attentive tutor. My daughter loves him. He is tutoring her on English GCSE and has already made her feel more confident and knowledgeable after a few sessions. She looks forward to his sessions and is enjoying the subject much more in class. I couldn't have asked for a better English tutor for my daughter and I hope he can continue working with her as he is so excellent!

Nick was absolutely amazing in the short time I had him before my exams. He made me feel so much more confident in my English abilities after poor teaching brought down my confidence. I would recommend Nick to everyone, he is so patient and kind to work with. Thank you for your help!

Tutor response

Ah thank you Molly!

Nick has done an amazing job at reigniting my son's interest in English after some disappointing mock grades and poor teaching at school resulted in him losing confidence and largely switching off. Nick has an infectious love for the subject matter and a very interactive, engaging style. He clearly identifies areas for improvement and is good at building them into strengths and he is always willing to mark additional work and provide more feedback. After a few sessions with Nick, my son who often needs lots of nudging to get school homework fully completed, has completely changed his attitude and has asked to increase the frequency of sessions with Nick. It couldn't have worked out better for us.
