Tutor Profile

Robb

Private Maths and Music Production Tutor in Somerton

Hello, I’m Robb, a maths tutor based between London and Somerset. I hold a BA (Hons) in Primary Teacher Education from Oxford Brookes University and a Master’s degree from Bath Spa University.

I am someone who enjoys problem solving, and I find maths to be a bit like solving puzzles. I try to bring this perspective into my teaching so that mathematics feels less daunting and more approachable.

Alongside tutoring, I work professionally as a songwriter and music producer in London. My work has received international support on radio and streaming platforms and been performed at major festivals including Glastonbury, Reading & Leeds, and the Isle of Wight Festival.

Outside of work, I enjoy rugby, travelling, cinema and cooking.

Teaching Experience

I have been tutoring maths for over 10 years and have worked with students ranging from primary school age through to GCSE level.

My experience includes preparing students for Common Entrance examinations, independent school entrance exams, SATs, and GCSE Mathematics. I have supported students of all abilities, from those who have lost confidence in maths and need additional support, to high-achieving students aiming for top grades and scholarships.

Over the years, I have helped many students improve both their understanding and enjoyment of mathematics by breaking down difficult concepts into manageable steps and tailoring lessons to each individual’s needs.

Tutoring Approach

My approach to tutoring is friendly, patient and tailored to the individual student. Every student learns differently, so I adapt my lessons to suit their needs, strengths and learning style.

I focus on building a strong understanding of the underlying concepts rather than simply memorising methods. Once students understand why something works, they are often able to tackle unfamiliar questions with much greater confidence.

I encourage students to ask questions, make mistakes and think independently.

Robb has been excellent with my shy 12 year old son who is lacking in confidence. He is always extremely well prepared and endlessly patient.

Tutor response

Thank you so much, Jenny. It’s been a pleasure. I’m looking forward to helping him build on the progress he’s been making.

We found Robb to be a first class tutor and would highly recommend him. He was very organised and thorough prior to the lesson, checking what the children had been working on and whether there were any particular areas of difficulty, in order to provide a session that was tailored to their needs. On the video call he was approachable, engaging and managed to cover a lot of ground in a clear and fun way. The children are now really looking forward to their second lesson - excellent!

Tutor response

Thank you so much for you comments Madelaine! Really appreciate it. Looking forward to the second session !

Our 9 year old had his first lesson with Robb and couldn't wait for the next one. Robb captured our son's attention straight away and held it for the entire lesson. We have struggled to get our son to learn his times tables but he will gladly learn them for Robb so we are very happy indeed.

Robb was an excellent Maths tutor to our eight year old daughter, Meg, over a short course of around eight sessions. He related well to Meg from the outset, and was clear and focused about his teaching aims. He was able to boost Meg's skills and confidence in Maths - in part by successfully conveying an enthusiasm for the subject - and we would certainly recommend him, either as a year-round Maths tutor, or for a short course of 'booster' sessions.

Our son looks forward to Robb coming and is really enthusiastic about maths now which is great. He has identified areas where our son needs help with his maths and is helping to build his confidence to 'have a go' where he would normally feel defeated.
