Dr.Mel

I'm Mel, a father of three children living in Manchester. I tutor for all levels of Biology, as well as GCSE and KS3 Maths, English, Physics and Chemistry.

Teaching Experience

For the last ten years I have tutored hundreds of students in Maths, English, Biology, chemistry and Physics. I've also taught a number of students in the US, China, Russia, Canada and many countries in Europe. To date I have taught 20,000+ lessons.

Tutoring Approach

I like to keep a flexible teaching style to work out what is best for each student.

Depending on what you need help with, we`ll work together in your first lesson to design a plan that will take you to where you need to be.

This might involve practising your maths skills, gaining confidence with concepts on the syllabus, or translating your knowledge more effectively into marks on your exam. Many students struggle with exam technique and it is definitely something a little tutoring can help with.

I have developed plenty of resources through my experience as a tutor to help students learn the key concepts on the biology syllabus for GCSE and A Level, and to get better at using this to tackle the harder exam questions. We`ll use a combination of slideshows, online whiteboard tasks, lots of discussion, and past paper practice to help you get the marks you need.

If you are happy to, I might ask you to do some practice for homework or to read up on some topics we will cover before the lesson. I find this can also help students with time management and study skills. For those looking to go on to study at university, this can be particularly helpful.

I also offer advice and practice interviews for those looking to apply to university for biology and related STEM subjects. This includes personal statement tips, ideas for developing your extracurricular interests, and help presenting yourself at interview.

Dr Mel has been a fantastic GCSE Maths and Science tutor for my son. He tailors each lesson to my son's individual needs, explains topics in a clear and engaging way, and has greatly increased both his confidence and his understanding of the subjects.

Mel is currently tutoring my son in preparation for his GCSEs. I can honestly say Mel has already boosted up his confidence and is such a good calming tutor, who is reassuring and very good at explaining the work. Would highly recommend Mel

First Tutors

Mel has been tutoring our daughter for a few months from the beginning of Year 11 in Maths and Combined Science for the year leading up to GCSE's. We are all extremely happy that we went with Mel over other tutors. He is an excellent tutor, very calm & patient, lessons are always planned well and our daughter says he has greatly helped her with her studies. We are continuing through to the end of the GCSE year and if needing a tutor beyond that he will be our first contact for A Levels. We would absolutely recommend Mel for any subjects he can help with. Many thanks for all your help Mel.

I would like to give a very positive feedback for my son Alan’s tutor. Mel is an excellent teacher in English, Maths, and the sciences — including Chemistry, Physics, and Biology. He explains everything clearly, is patient, and really understands how to support GCSE students. Since working with him, my son has become more confident and motivated in his studies. I highly recommend him to any parent looking for a reliable and knowledgeable tutor, moreover he is very flexible when it comes to arranging lesson times.

Great tutor used for GCSE english language, went through mark schemes and gave good feedback after each response, this was very useful as school did not do either of these things. Would recommend

Mel has tutored David for over 2 years now and has always delivered excellent well planned out lessons tailored to David's academic needs. We contacted Mel to provide support for David with his English GCSE's (Language and Literature), the support Mel has given David over the last two years helped him advance two grades on his initial predicted grades. I would definitely recommend Mel as a tutor for children of any age to support with their academic studies in any of his fields of expertise.

Two lessons so far. My daughter has led those with her physics queries and successfully completed homework she was confused about. The lessons then work from face bite size and AQA exam questions so seem very focused.

We are extremely happy with our choice of teacher Mel , my son has been having 2 lessons a week through the summer hols and is comfortable and confident with Mel. My son has actually said that Mel is better than his maths teacher, who he previously was his favorite and he never moans to going to his on-line lesson, unlike all other requests that we have had of him. We are booking Mel x1 per week right up until the GCES next year, Harrison says hes easy to talk to and explains the formulas really clearly and at his own pace. I am delighted to have found Mel for a tutor. Holly Boyd

My son had some reinforcement tuition sessions with Mel during the pandemic. During that time, he developed a range of skills to allow him to become more confident  in all aspects of his learning. The sessions he attended not only supported this development but provided a friendly, caring, and enjoyable environment, despite my son’s lack of concentration issues. We would like to thank you Mel for a very reassuring start in his progress already.

Mel is absolutely fantastic. He has been working with my 8 year old daughter who previously suffered with working memory loss for just over a month. The confidence in her and the change in her work already we can see has massively improved! Very highly recommended!

Mel has been simply great with our 10 year old son to the extent describes his weekly hour with Mel as “great fun”! Mel has been able to tailor our son’s sessions to supplement the work done at Junior Schook and give us the option of exploring the Private Schools Enteance Examinations if we choose to go down that route. Mel has been punctual and professional, really supportive and has built a good rapport with our son. We can’t recommend him highly enough. ’

First Tutors

Mel is encouraging and he creates a positive environment for learning. My daughter enjoys her lessons and she has improved in both Maths and English.

First Tutors

Mel's been tutoring for just over a month now for 11+ entrance/grammar exams. Primarily focusing on Maths & English Comprehension. Our daughter has made has noticable progress in the short time to help her to start raise her standards/skills needed. The methods applied by Mel with attential to detail are good, mixed with right levels of encouragement, and postive or constructive ciriticque too.

First Tutors

Mel is working with my son on maths, verbal reasoning and comprehension. My son has felt fully engaged with his lessons and is happily doing work Mel sets him, which is quite a testament to Mel as my son does not generally like to do any work.
