Tutoring Approach

My Tutoring Approach

My tutoring approach combines strong conceptual understanding with highly focused examination preparation. I believe students achieve the best results when they understand the reasoning behind each method, rather than relying only on memorisation.

Every lesson is tailored to the student’s:

  • 🎯 Current ability and target grade
  • 🔍 Strengths and weaker areas
  • 📚 Syllabus and examination requirements
  • ⏱️ Speed, accuracy and examination technique
  • 🎓 Academic and university goals

For students who need support with the fundamentals, I explain difficult concepts clearly and build their confidence step by step.

For stronger students aiming for A*, Grade 9 or competitive university courses, I provide more challenging questions designed to develop deeper reasoning, flexibility and independent problem-solving skills.

🌟 A* TARGETING SCHEME

For students who already find most standard past-paper questions relatively straightforward, I offer an A* Targeting Scheme.

This programme includes:

  • Original, high-difficulty questions from my own question bank
  • Personalised practice targeting individual weaknesses
  • Unfamiliar and multi-step problems beyond standard past papers
  • Detailed feedback on reasoning, accuracy and presentation
  • Regular targeted homework to maintain steady progress

The purpose of the scheme is not simply to give students more questions, but to challenge them with carefully designed problems that improve adaptability and prepare them for the most demanding examination questions.

📅 WPC — WEEKLY PROGRESS CHECKS

Selected programmes include Weekly Progress Checks to monitor students’ performance between lessons.

These checks may include:

  • Review of homework and completed work
  • Identification of recurring mistakes
  • Additional questions targeting weaker topics
  • Adjustments to future lessons and homework
  • Ongoing monitoring of progress towards target grades

WPC helps ensure that problems are identified early and that students continue making progress throughout the term.

🏖️ HPC — HOLIDAY PROGRESS CHECKS

Holiday Progress Checks provide structured practice and progress monitoring during school holidays.

Students may receive targeted work designed to:

  • Maintain knowledge and examination skills
  • Prevent learning gaps during longer breaks
  • Review previously studied topics
  • Prepare for upcoming school assessments or examinations
  • Continue working towards long-term academic goals

HPC allows students to remain academically active during holidays without simply repeating large amounts of unfocused work.

🖥️ TMUA, ESAT AND DIGITAL SAT PREPARATION

My entrance examination programmes combine:

  • Exclusive online timed mock examinations
  • Original practice papers and question sets
  • Performance analysis and weakness identification
  • Training in speed, accuracy and time management
  • Advanced problem-solving and unfamiliar questions
  • Interview-style questions where appropriate

My exclusive online mock examination system allows students to practise under realistic timed conditions. Their results help identify patterns in timing, accuracy, topic knowledge and examination strategy, allowing future lessons to be adjusted more precisely.

For TMUA and ESAT students, lessons may also include longer and more demanding questions designed to develop the deeper reasoning required for university interviews and unfamiliar academic discussions.

I place strong emphasis on examination strategy, including how to:

  • Manage time effectively
  • Recognise common question structures
  • Avoid unnecessary errors
  • Remain calm under pressure

💬 Support Outside Lessons

Outside lessons, students are welcome to contact me through WhatsApp for short academic questions and support.

This allows straightforward difficulties to be resolved quickly, so lesson time can be used more effectively for deeper explanations, challenging questions and examination practice.

🎯 My Overall Aim

My overall aim is not only to improve students’ grades, but also to help them become:

  • Confident
  • Independent
  • Adaptable
  • Intellectually curious learners

Dr Jon is an exceptional and highly accomplished tutor. He taught both GCSE Physics and Mathematics, followed by A-level Mathematics, to my son and daughter. My son achieved an A* in A-level Mathematics, and my daughter recently achieved an A despite all the challenges and concerns surrounding this year’s examinations. Dr Jon provides a structured programme tailored to each student’s individual needs and carefully addresses any gaps in their knowledge. He is extremely thorough, places a strong emphasis on examination technique and preparation, and provides excellent, constructive feedback. My children improved consistently in their grades under his tutorship. He is friendly, approachable and highly competent. As parents, we have been extremely pleased with his professionalism and the support and advice he has provided. Both my children liked his approach. He is honest about a student’s current standard and explains clearly how he will help them improve their grade. His ability is reflected in the excellent results his students achieve. Dr Jon is an outstanding tutor, and I would highly recommend him

I’ve been having lessons for almost three years, covering GCSE Maths and Physics and then A‑Level Maths and Further Maths. The support I’ve had has made a huge difference to my confidence and understanding. My tutor explains things clearly, is patient, and always makes sure I really understand the methods rather than just memorising them. Thanks to these lessons, I’ve achieved great results and feel properly prepared for the next stage. I’m really grateful for all the help over the years and would definitely recommend him to anyone looking for a strong tutor.

Dr Jon has been a fantastic tutor over the past few years, from when I started having lessons in Year 10 up till Year 13. He was extremely kind, patient and encouraging, and he was always happy to offer help even after lessons if I encountered concepts that I found to be confusing. Dr Jon taught me Physics at GCSE and A-level. Not only did he teach useful and creative ways for memorising and understanding various concepts, which made the lessons very engaging, he also utilised a lot of sophisticated and advanced exam-style questions, ensuring I was fully prepared for my exams. Overall, Dr Jon is a great tutor. I would highly recommend him. Thank you, Dr Jon!

Thank you Dr Jon! Best mentor and friend our son could possibly have wished for! For the past 3 years he tutored Alexis for Maths and Physics, methodically strengthening his weak points, challenging him to push the limits, encouraging him all the way and raising his confidence. The academic preparation is impeccable: plenty materials and resources well structured and tailored to specific needs, covering all the curriculum and exam techniques; personalised exam mock tests; constant guidance and feedback for both student and parents. Dr Jon helped our son achieve his goals, straight 9’s at GCSE and successful admission to Cambridge for Engineering. We are grateful for having the chance to work with Dr Jon and 100% recommend him!

Since the beginning, Dr Jon has always made his lessons extremely enjoyable and has made all the content we approach very understandable and had always taught each and every topic in great detail while still making sure didn't seem overcomplicated. He taught in a way where even the hardest of topics still made sense and didn't seem too difficult. His style of teaching is very exam oriented while still providing great foundational knowledge that not only helps you remember the content, but also gives you insight into why things are actually the way they are. Dr Jon started tutoring me for ESAT and TMUA, where he went over key physics and maths topics, before going into exam practice. The lesson structure really helped me understand the content in great detail, while also learning key exam techniques, which helped me out greatly when sitting the exams. After finishing the ESAT and TMUA, he also started tutoring me for the STEP exam. For these lessons, we went over past paper and exam-style questions for STEP, which gave me familiarity with the style of questions for STEP and helped me greatly improve my time to answer questions and also improved my overall critical thinking. As a summary, his lessons were always very helpful and again, extremely enjoyable. I always looked forward to his lessons and I always really enjoyed the sessions with him. He always somehow made the lessons interesting and fun while still being helpful. I have seen a great improvement in my skillset because of his tutoring. He is also extremely friendly and approachable, and will goes out of his way to help you. I am really grateful to have him tutor me and I will forever be thankful for his amazing and fun lessons.
