Alison

I have been a qualified primary teacher for over 30 years and have over 15 years experience in tutoring maths and English. I firmly believe that boosting confidence and building the foundations in learning in a relaxed and supportive environment is the key to a child's success. I aim to lead the way and help every child I teach achieve their goal and shine whether in the classroom, SATS or the 11+

Teaching Experience

• Qualified teacher since 1987 with 15 years’ tutoring experience

• Warm, friendly, and approachable style that helps students feel at ease

• Skilled at building confidence as well as academic ability

• Extensive experience supporting SEN and neurodivergent learners, with a focus on Years 3–6 (but also working across nursery to Year 11)

• Professional and reassuring, with regular feedback for parents to track progress

. I have helped children struggling in the bottom set in school to achieve top marks in their SATs and get into the secondary schools of their choice.

Tutoring Approach

I specialise in building confidence to guide students from Year 3 onwards in English and maths with a strong focus on SATs preparation and 11+ preparation.

I cover the Maths and English national curriculum and focus on the areas that your child needs extra support with, working towards their SATs tests or 11+ exams to achieve their potential.

My approach is warm and relaxed with an emphasis on confidence-building. I encourage children to let me know what they struggle with, ask questions and to be inquisitive about what they're learning.

Each lesson is tailored to your child’s needs and learning style. Whether your child needs help with maths, literacy, reasoning or exam preparation, I provide the tools and encouragement to help them shine.

My lessons are conducted in a supportive environment where your child can learn and achieve in a safe place where mistakes are learning opportunities. Each child is encouraged to take pride in every achievement, helping them to build strong foundations in reading, writing, comprehension and maths.

I teach practical strategies and encourage steady progress towards classroom success and exam readiness.

I aim to make my lessons both enjoyable and rewarding, with a variety of resources, where a child is able to work at their own pace. When a child is successful at each small step, confidence grows and learning can really begin.

My lessons take place at my home or online through Zoom if preferred. Lessons are usually for one hour, although this can be flexible.

Alison has tutored Lillie for six years, and throughout that time she has been truly exceptional. Lillie is dyslexic, and Alison has always adapted her teaching with patience, creativity, and genuine understanding. She explains concepts clearly, breaks material down in a way that makes sense to Lillie, and uses strategies that help her learn confidently and independently. Lillie’s progress has been remarkable. When she started Year 7 at Hertswood Academy she was placed in the lower set, but by Year 10 she had moved into the top sets — a transformation that boosted both her academic performance and her self-belief. As Lillie got older, she was so comfortable with Alison’s teaching style that she didn’t want to work with any other tutor. Alison kindly agreed to continue supporting her right through to her GCSE mock exams, ensuring consistency, stability, and ongoing progress at a crucial stage in her education. Alison’s dedication, reliability, and genuine care have made an enormous difference to Lillie’s learning journey. I would highly recommend Alison to anyone seeking a knowledgeable, compassionate, and exceptionally effective tutor.

Child really clicks with Alison and enjoys the session. More specifically, my child does not consider the assignments 'work' so it's more engaging. Still early days but hoping it can be sustained.

Tutor response

Hi Clare, Thank you so much for your positive feedback. I'm glad that Ronan is enjoying his sessions with me. Perhaps you could let me know how I could turn that 4/5 to a 5/5 for you and Ronan!

Alison has been an excellent tutor for my two children for the Yr 3 - 6 curriculum in Maths and English. They have both improved academically through tutoring and are more confident when sitting exams as a result of Alison’s help.
