Cat

Hi, I'm Cat and I tutor Maths and TMUA preparation with 400+ hours of lessons. As a soon-to-be Maths graduate from UCL, I know how tough Maths can be. So my goal is to create a supportive and engaging learning environment where students are encouraged to ask questions and challenge themselves, to not be afraid of not knowing and embrace making mistakes. Rather than focusing on just 'knowing', I try to inspire students to 'understand' the concepts behind the subject.

Teaching Experience

I first started volunteering as a Maths tutor in 2021, helping a GCSE Maths student to achieve their desired grade 7. Since then, I have moved into professional tuition, working with small groups across KS2 to A-level at a local centre and also one-to-one as a private tutor for KS3 to A-level. In these roles, I have honed my ability to adapt explanations to different ages and abilities, track progress through formative assessment and maintain open communication with parents. I assess individual learning gaps and needs to design personalised lesson plans and create bespoke resources, leading to grade improvements – one student progressed from repeatedly failing their GCSE Maths to passing under my tuition!

During my Get Into Teaching Mathematics internship with the Department for Education, I gained structured classroom experience across primary and secondary settings. There I observed and analysed lesson structure, formative assessment, differentiation and behaviour management strategies to inform my own practice. I then planned and delivered my own lessons using evidence-based strategies like Cognitive Load Theory, modelling and scaffolding and led enrichment sessions for high-attaining students preparing for entrance exams such as the TMUA, MAT and ESAT. This blend of one‑to‑one tutoring and classroom practice has given me a versatile toolkit for helping students build both understanding and confidence in Mathematics.

Tutoring Approach

My tutoring style has been developed over several years of helping students attain their academic goals. Lessons are tailored to each student’s pace, syllabus and needs. Be it for homework help or teaching from scratch, I am willing to create personalised resources and develop exam strategy – maximising success when the big day comes. Where appropriate, I will set additional practice questions, quizzes as well as topic and mock tests to consolidate their knowledge and track progress.

Cat Doan has helped me improve both my understanding of maths and my confidence in the subject. She is incredibly patient and always takes the time to explain concepts clearly, especially when I am slower to grasp a topic. She never makes me feel rushed or judged and is always willing to go over things as many times as needed until I fully understand. Her lessons are well-structured, engaging, and tailored to my individual needs. She breaks down difficult problems into manageable steps, making even challenging topics much easier to understand. Cat is also very encouraging and supportive, which has helped me stay motivated and develop a more positive attitude towards maths.
