Bruce

Friendly and experienced GCSE & 11+ English teacher who currently resides in south London area with my family and dog. I have a passion for literature, creative writing, and student development. Enjoys reading fiction/non-fiction (especially history), music, travelling, cooking and exploring different cultures. I try to incorporate these interests to create engaging and inspiring lessons that support student confidence and achievement.

Teaching Experience

I've been teaching for more than 25 years and cover different age groups and learner backgrounds. My specialised subject area is GCSE English Language & Literature for the AQA, Edexcel, OCR, WJEC and CCEA examination boards. Until recently I taught various courses and disciplines (Foundation/Undergraduate/Post-graduate) at The University of Sussex. I was also an examiner for both The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) and Cambridge main suite speaking module for more than 16 years. My initial professional experience was gained in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) in both private and public sector organisations.

Tutoring Approach

I am a supportive and intuitive tutor who develops a good rapport with students. Through my professional teaching practice I have used a variety of teaching approaches, whether it be teacher/student led or more focussed as in task based learning activities. In the often challenging classroom environment, I have also developed strategies to deal with differentiation and delivered a variety of programmes successfully. Overall, I have obtained excellent results when preparing students on both intensive and long term courses. This is evidenced in strong achievements in examination grades.

Bruce has been amazing, he took on my son to support him with English retakes, Bruce quickly grew a good rapport with my son and established areas for improvement and a targeted improvement plan, using a variety of techniques aligned to my sons learning capabilities, my son quickly improved and subsequently passed the retakes with a vastly improved score. We continued with Bruce to further develop the use of good English practices in my sons further academic studies. Bruce has been supportive and flexible above and beyond and i would recommend him for all higher levels of English education. Thank you.

Feedback for English Tutor: My son has really enjoyed his English. The tutor is patient, supportive, and very thorough in explaining complex topics, especially around essay structure and literary analysis. We’ve noticed an improvement in his confidence in both language and literature. We also appreciate the tutor’s organised approach and the way lessons are tailored to his specific needs and exam goals. It’s clear that the tutor cares about his progress and takes time to review his work in detail. Diamond M'vimvi M (Starling's Dad)
