Tutor Profile

Elena

I recently completed my doctorate in History at Magdalen College, Oxford. I am an experienced tutor for GCSE, A Level and university students. My approach makes learning gamified, helping students not only with organising their revision, structuring essays and writing in exam conditions, but also showing them how it can be enjoyable and fun.

Teaching Experience

I have tutored students in GCSE and A Level History, as well as GCSE Religious Studies, in person and online.

I have also led undergraduate tutorials, seminars and lectures at various colleges in Oxford, including the final year special subject 'Joan of Arc and her Age:1419-31' and 'European and World History: The Late Medieval World 1300-1525'. I have worked as an essay tutor and led sessions on writing and research skills for first year undergraduates. From 2024-2025, I was an undergraduate dissertation supervisor.

As an Outreach Tutor for the History Faculty at the University of Oxford, I led a range of activities for secondary school students from year 7 through to sixth form. This included workshops on primary source analysis and historiography, and specialist lectures on elements of my research. I also contributed to supporting students in the admissions process through mock interviews for the History Faculty and also for Magdalen College School. Outside of Oxford, I am familiar with the University of London system having undertaken my undergraduate and masters degrees at Royal Holloway and pursued intercollegiate modules at UCL, KCL and Queen Mary.

Tutoring Approach

I help students realise their potential as historians and critical thinkers. In the first meeting, I gain an understanding of how the student currently works, where they need to improve, and what methods may work best for them. I adapt my teaching to the individual student, catering to their needs and learning styles. For example, for a student struggling to understand the foreign policy of Henry VII, I created a board-game style map of the countries, used game pieces to map the relations, treaties, and battles, and wrote notes on the map of the key points. I take this same approach with teaching religious studies.

I have ADHD and have personal experience of organising revision and structuring essays through gamifying revision to pick up the facts needed and planning exam answers to make writing the essays manageable.
