I grew up near Reading with a love of mathematics. My parents were both teachers; my mother ran a nursery school from our home. I studied Mathematics at the University of Nottingham. When I wrote my dissertation, it became obvious that teaching was already in my bones: the project was a booklet that made complicated theory accessible to A-Level students and younger; I received a first. I became motivated by making interesting ideas accessible to young people — a thread that still runs through everything I do, whether a student is fighting the belief that they “just can’t do maths” or a top student is pushing beyond the syllabus.

I taught for five years at UCS Hampstead, working with high-attaining A-Level further mathematicians and Oxbridge applicants as well as students who needed patient, structured support. I also hold a BA (Hons) Acting from Drama Centre London and a diploma in Python. That mix — mathematical depth, performance training, and long classroom experience — shapes how I read a room online, pace explanations, and keep sessions focused without feeling cold.

Teaching Experience

I’ve taught across UK specifications including: Edexcel (including International GCSE/iGCSE), AQA, OCR (including MEI), and IB.

19+ years teaching and tutoring. 7,000+ hours one-to-one tuition. Former UCS Hampstead teacher.

As a mathematician I can extend and adapt beyond UK boards where international curricula require it — the aim is always to match marking criteria and classroom language, not to introduce a parallel system.

Tutoring Approach

I am excellent at picking up on what a student is struggling with when working through a mathematical concept, and then guide them through their thinking rather than give them the answers outright. Their ability to think through problems and ideas is essential to their confidence and their understanding and this is the cornerstone of my teaching method.

I build understanding and confidence systematically when working over a continued period. If the student is looking for a few isolated sessions I focus on on the area they need help with and help them break down the topic into bite sized chunks.

I also offer exam prep sessions which focus on revision, exam technique and problem solving skills.

Matthew has been tutoring my son on the lead up to his GCSEs. For health reasons my son had missed quite a bit of school and although he enjoys maths and is quite good at it, he had some large gaps in his knowledge, which resulted in lower test results and subsequently confidence issues. Matthew has really helped Max to get back on track. Working with him on topics he has missed and also some topics he needed to revisit. Matthew’s friendly approach has been perfect and he has really engaged with Max. As his knowledge and understanding have improved so to has his confidence and sharpness at being able to work out answers. Max has really enjoyed his sessions with Matthew and my only regret is that we hadn’t found him sooner ! I wouldn’t hesitate in recommending Matthew

His explanations are clear and he ensures that the student understands at each stage. We chose Matt to help our daughter with her Maths IGCSE (Core) after having a not so good experience with a previous tutor. We only had three weeks with Matt in which to help prepare for her exams and, bearing in mind that we took him on at the eleventh hour, he truly did a stellar job at imparting a vast amount of knowledge in a very short time.
