Private English and Business Related Tutor in Salford

Experienced, Qualified and Transformational Tutor

I am a QTS-certified teacher with a Master's in Education (Distinction), PGCE and CELTA, with more than 10 years' experience supporting learners across a diverse range of ages, abilities, educational levels and backgrounds. I work with learners aged 3 to 60+, including UK home students, international students, mature learners returning to education, and learners with SEND and EHCPs. My experience spans GCSEs, A levels, diplomas, Access courses, apprenticeships, undergraduate degrees and Master's-level postgraduate study, including MBA programmes and social science and humanities disciplines such as Social Anthropology, Sociology and Psychology. I have supported learners studying English Language and Literature, EFL speaking, listening, reading and writing, Business Studies, Law, Criminology, Forensic Science, Performing Arts and Dance Studies, alongside Psychology, Sociology, Social Work and Health and Social Care. I have also supported individuals preparing for professional careers in nursing, social work, counselling and therapy. In addition, I can support learners currently completing their PGCE, Master's in Education, or undergraduate and postgraduate courses across the social sciences and humanities, including academic writing, research, critical analysis, essay structure, study skills and independent learning. My experience includes working for Manchester City Council, teaching ESOL learners from Entry Level and Functional Skills English through to Levels 1–3. As a CELTA-certified teacher, awarded through Cambridge English at the University of Cambridge, I am particularly well equipped to support learners developing English as an additional or foreign language. I have also taught as a Lecturer in partnership with the University of Salford, supporting learners on Level 3 Access to Social Work and Level 4 Psychology courses, helping them develop the academic confidence, study skills and subject knowledge required to progress successfully into higher education and professional pathways.

I have a strong and demonstrable record of transforming academic outcomes and changing learners' perceptions of what they are capable of achieving. Through personalised 1:1 tuition, targeted intervention and carefully structured examination preparation, I have supported both international and UK students who were achieving or predicted Grades 2 and 3 in English Language and Literature to ultimately achieve Grade 8 in their final examinations, including AQA, Edexcel, OCR, WJEC Eduqas specifications. These achievements represent far more than improved grades: learners have developed greater self-belief, independence and resilience, enabling them to pursue further educational and career opportunities that may previously have appeared beyond their reach. I specialise in identifying the underlying barriers preventing progress, whether these relate to subject knowledge, literacy, comprehension, examination technique, confidence, organisation or motivation, and then designing personalised strategies to address them. I also have over 10 years' experience supporting learners with SEND and EHCPs, including learners with dyslexia, autism and ADHD, as well as learners experiencing anxiety, depression and other barriers to engagement. I use an empathetic but appropriately challenging approach, breaking complex tasks into manageable stages and helping learners recognise their strengths. Whether helping an A-level student strengthen their analytical writing in Business Studies, Law, Criminology or Psychology, supporting a learner with Forensic Science or Performing Arts, or helping an English student overcome significant attainment gaps, I aim to ensure that every learner experiences tangible progress and develops the confidence to take ownership of their education.

I also recognise that academic achievement depends upon much more than subject knowledge. I therefore provide comprehensive support with study skills, time management, organisation, planning, revision, examination preparation, goal-setting and mindset development, particularly for learners experiencing low volition, procrastination or a lack of motivation. As a certified Performance Life Coach and Careers Adviser, I help learners establish meaningful SMART targets, develop sustainable routines and connect their immediate academic objectives with their longer-term educational and career aspirations. I am also currently undertaking professional development towards qualifications in Counselling and Hypnotherapy, complementing my existing teaching, coaching and pastoral experience and enabling me to support learners interested in exploring these areas as future educational or career pathways. Whether a learner is preparing for GCSEs, completing an Access course, entering university, undertaking a PGCE, studying for a Master's degree, or considering a future career in counselling, therapy or education, I provide structured, encouraging and purposeful guidance that helps them move forward with greater clarity and confidence.

My academic and professional interests also provide me with a strong understanding of educational inequality, inclusion and barriers to progression. My Master's dissertation examined the barriers and challenges experienced by individuals from Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) backgrounds in relation to educational and career progression within UK higher education academia. This research developed my understanding of how exclusion, unconscious bias, institutional barriers and subtle forms of racism can affect learners' educational experiences, confidence and progression. I am therefore particularly keen to provide additional academic and personal support to learners from ethnically diverse backgrounds who may feel marginalised, overlooked or excluded within educational environments. My approach is inclusive, respectful and empowering, helping learners recognise their abilities, navigate barriers and pursue their ambitions with confidence.

Ultimately, I offer more than conventional tutoring: I provide a holistic educational, developmental and motivational service. I combine qualified teaching expertise, extensive SEND experience, academic knowledge, coaching, careers guidance and a genuine commitment to learner progression. I work with individuals rather than simply teaching subjects, taking time to understand their starting point, aspirations, learning preferences and barriers before developing a purposeful pathway towards their goals. Whether supporting a young learner with SEND, an international student developing their English, a GCSE student aiming for a higher grade, an A-level student studying Health care courses, Law, Sociology, Business, Criminology or Psychology, a mature learner returning to education, an Access student preparing for university, a PGCE trainee, a Master's student, or someone exploring a future career in education, counselling or therapy, my objective remains the same: to unlock potential, build confidence, develop independence and help every learner become the person they are more than capable to become. I take considerable pride in helping learners not only achieve better results, but also regain their motivation, strengthen their sense of purpose and take genuine ownership of their education, career and future.

Teaching Experience

I bring a broad and highly adaptable teaching background spanning primary and secondary education, further education, adult learning, higher education and specialist learning support. As an English Subject Departmental Lead and Teacher of English within a private Christian independent school, I have taught GCSE English Language and English Literature, including the AQA specifications, whilst contributing to curriculum development, lesson planning, assessment, progress monitoring and targeted intervention. I have designed and delivered engaging, differentiated learning programmes that respond to individual attainment levels, learning gaps and aspirations. Through focused 1:1 and small-group intervention, I have successfully supported learners who were initially working around Grades 2 and 3 and struggling to secure a pass to progress towards Grades 6 and 7 and above, whilst also supporting learners initially predicted Grades 4 - 6 to achieve Grade 8 in their final AQA English Language and English Literature examinations. These outcomes reflect my ability to identify precise barriers to attainment, implement targeted intervention and develop learners' confidence, examination technique and subject knowledge. As a departmental lead, I have also supported consistency in curriculum delivery, assessment and high expectations, using learner progress and attainment information to inform intervention and improvement strategies. Working within a private Christian school has further developed my ability to establish a nurturing, values-led learning culture in which academic achievement, personal development, integrity, respect and aspiration are embedded within the learning experience.

Alongside my secondary English teaching, I have worked as a Lecturer delivering and supporting Access courses in Social Work and Psychology, including Level 3 Access to Social Work and Level 4 Psychology provision in partnership with the University of Salford. This has involved developing learners' academic confidence, critical thinking, research skills, academic writing and independent study capabilities, whilst preparing mature and returning learners for progression into higher education and professional careers. My experience also includes working as a Learning Support Tutor for learners with SEND, EHCPs and diagnosed additional learning needs, including learners with Autism, Dyslexia and ADHD, as well as those experiencing mental health difficulties. I have supported children in care (LACs) and learners with previous trauma and high Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), requiring a particularly sensitive, trauma-informed and relational approach. I focus on creating supportive learning environments, establishing trust, identifying individual barriers to learning and developing practical strategies that enable learners to engage more confidently and independently with education.

My professional experience extends beyond teaching into employability, vocational development and adult education. As a Job Coach supporting learners with additional learning needs, I have helped individuals develop employability skills, confidence, workplace readiness and realistic progression pathways, whilst recognising and accommodating individual barriers to employment. I have also worked as a Teacher Instructor for Manchester City Council, teaching ESOL learners Functional Skills English from Entry Level through to Levels 1–3, supporting individuals from diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds to strengthen their speaking, listening, reading and writing skills. Across these roles, I have developed a particularly strong ability to adapt my communication, teaching methodology and expectations to the individual learner. Whether supporting a GCSE student to progress from Grades 2 and 3 towards Grades 6 and 7+, an English learner targeting Grade 8, an Access learner progressing towards university, an ESOL learner developing functional English, or a learner with SEND working towards greater independence and employability, I combine high expectations with empathy, structure and personalised support, ensuring that learners are not defined by their starting point but empowered to progress beyond it.

Tutoring Approach

My approach to tutoring is personalised, evidence-informed, aspirational and fundamentally learner-centred. I do not believe effective tutoring is simply about delivering more content; it is about understanding the individual behind the learning, identifying the precise barriers preventing progress and creating a clear, achievable pathway towards success. From the outset, I take time to understand a learner's current attainment, strengths, areas for development, learning preferences, confidence, motivation and longer-term aspirations. I then use this information to establish clear SMART targets and measurable outcomes, ensuring that every session has a clear purpose and that progress can be recognised, evaluated and celebrated. I combine high expectations with warmth, patience and encouragement, creating an environment in which learners feel safe to make mistakes, ask questions and challenge themselves without fear of judgement.

A key strength of my tutoring is my ability to diagnose learning gaps and turn them into focused, achievable interventions. Rather than relying on a one-size-fits-all approach, I carefully analyse where a learner is currently performing and identify the specific knowledge, skills or misconceptions preventing them from reaching the next level. For GCSE English, for example, this may involve analysing examination responses against the AQA assessment objectives, identifying weaknesses in analysis, evaluation, structure, technical accuracy or use of evidence, and then explicitly teaching the skills required to improve. I break complex concepts into manageable stages, model high-quality responses, use guided practice before gradually transferring responsibility to the learner, and revisit previously taught material to consolidate long-term retention. This structured approach has enabled me to support learners who were initially working around Grades 2 and 3 to progress towards Grades 6 and 7 and above, whilst learners initially predicted Grades 5 and 6 have achieved Grade 8 in AQA English Language and Literature in their final exams.

I also recognise that motivation, confidence and mindset can be just as important as academic ability. Many learners I have supported have not lacked intelligence or potential; they have lacked confidence, direction, effective study strategies or belief in their own capabilities. As a certified Performance Life Coach and Careers Adviser, I incorporate elements of coaching into my tutoring to help learners develop ownership of their learning and reconnect their current studies with their future aspirations. I support learners with time management, organisation, planning, revision strategies, prioritisation, goal-setting, procrastination and mindset, particularly where low motivation or low volition has become a barrier to achievement. I help learners establish realistic routines and SMART targets, whilst celebrating incremental progress so that success becomes visible and motivating. My aim is to move learners from "I cannot do this" towards "I know what I need to do, and I know how to do it."

My extensive experience supporting SEND learners, EHCPs and learners with additional learning needs also means that I understand the importance of adapting tutoring to the individual rather than expecting the individual to adapt to a fixed teaching method. I have worked with learners with Autism, Dyslexia and ADHD, as well as learners experiencing anxiety, depression, previous trauma and high ACEs. I therefore consider factors such as cognitive load, processing time, attention, working memory, confidence and sensory or emotional needs when designing sessions. I use appropriate scaffolding, chunking, repetition, retrieval, visual support, questioning and differentiated tasks where beneficial, whilst maintaining appropriately high expectations. For learners from diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds, including ESOL learners, I also ensure that language development is integrated naturally into subject teaching rather than becoming an additional barrier to accessing the curriculum.

Ultimately, I see tutoring as a partnership between tutor and learner. My role is not to create dependency, but to gradually develop the learner's independence, confidence and ability to take responsibility for their own progress. I provide constructive, specific feedback that tells learners not simply what they have done incorrectly, but why it matters, how they can improve it and what they should do next. I regularly review progress against agreed targets and adapt the learning programme when evidence suggests a different approach is required. Whether I am supporting a child, GCSE student, A-level learner, mature Access student, university student, PGCE trainee or postgraduate learner, I bring the same combination of professional expertise, empathy, intellectual rigour and genuine commitment to individual success.

Most importantly, I want learners to experience tutoring as a turning point rather than simply another lesson. I have seen the profound difference that targeted academic support, encouragement and a renewed sense of purpose can make to a learner's confidence and future trajectory. My ultimate goal is therefore not merely to help learners achieve a particular grade, pass an examination or complete an assignment; it is to help them discover their capabilities, overcome barriers, develop sustainable learning habits and believe that their ambitions are achievable. When a learner leaves a session knowing what they have achieved, understanding what they need to work on next and feeling genuinely confident that they can succeed, I know the tutoring has had real impact.

Hi Sabal, Well done on getting your final A*, B, B grades for progression on to your preferred choice of university, whereby you stated that you experienced and evidently achieved a “massive improvement from last year where you barely passed”. Thank you for your kind compliments; it has been a pleasure working with you. I’m sure you will have a bright future ahead working in Law as a solicitor or barrister. Congratulations! If you ever need any further support in the future with your university studies and beyond, you are welcome to get back in contact as I also have legal connections. Kind regards, Jade

Contacted Jadie for GCSE tuition for my daughter. Advertisement stated lesson was £40 per hour which was fine, however was then asked for £5 extra per lesson for travel expenses. Thought this was over priced, so didn’t continue to start the tuition.
