Tutor Profile

Laura

Private Physics and Maths Tutor in London

Hello! I’m Laura, a Physics PhD student at Imperial College London with a Master’s degree in Physics and several years of tutoring experience across a wide range of ages and abilities.

I specialise in Physics and Mathematics, teaching students from GCSE and A-Level through to IB and first-year university courses. I also have extensive experience preparing students for competitive school and university entrance exams, including independent school admissions and STEM admissions tests.

My approach is patient, supportive and tailored to each individual student. I believe that understanding is far more important than memorisation, so I focus on building strong foundations, developing problem-solving skills and helping students gain the confidence to tackle challenging questions independently. Whether a student is aiming for top grades, preparing for an important exam, or simply wants to feel more confident in the subject, I adapt every lesson to their goals and learning style.

Alongside my tutoring, my research in Physics Education allows me to stay up to date with effective teaching strategies and gives me a deep understanding of the misconceptions students commonly face. This helps me explain difficult concepts clearly and identify the areas where students need the most support.

Above all, I aim to create an encouraging learning environment where students feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes and developing genuine confidence in their abilities.

Teaching Experience

Over the past several years, I have worked with students across a wide range of ages, abilities and educational backgrounds, providing one-to-one tuition in Physics, Mathematics and Science. I have supported students preparing for GCSE, A-Level, IB and university examinations, as well as younger pupils preparing for competitive independent school entrance exams.

Alongside private tutoring, I work as a Graduate Teaching Assistant at Imperial College London, where I support undergraduate students through teaching sessions, problem-solving classes and laboratory work. This experience has strengthened my ability to explain complex concepts clearly and adapt my teaching to students with different levels of prior knowledge.

I have worked with students pursuing a variety of goals, from building confidence in a subject and improving predicted grades to preparing for university admissions tests, resits and highly competitive examinations. I also have experience supporting students with diverse learning needs, including those with ADHD, and always tailor my lessons to each student’s individual learning style and pace.

My lessons are structured, engaging and interactive, with a strong focus on developing genuine understanding rather than rote memorisation. I use carefully chosen examples, exam-style questions and regular feedback to help students make steady, measurable progress while building confidence in their own abilities.

Tutoring Approach

Every student learns differently, so I tailor each lesson to their individual needs, goals and learning style. At the start of our work together, I identify the student’s strengths and the areas where they need the most support, allowing me to create a personalised plan that helps them make consistent progress.

My teaching focuses on developing a deep understanding of concepts rather than simply memorising formulas or methods. I encourage students to explain their thinking, ask questions and develop their own problem-solving skills, as I believe this leads to greater confidence and long-term success. Complex topics are broken down into manageable steps using clear explanations, diagrams, real-world examples and carefully chosen practice questions.

As students become more confident, we move on to increasingly challenging problems and exam-style questions, helping them apply their knowledge under realistic conditions. Throughout the process, I provide regular feedback, adapt lessons based on progress and ensure students feel supported in a positive, encouraging learning environment.

My aim is not only to help students achieve excellent results, but also to help them become more independent, resilient and confident learners.
