I have been tutoring since 2008 via First Tutors. I have taught English in Japan as ESL, and in Scotland I have tutored primary and secondary school students.
My speciality is supporting National 5 and Higher students move from a fail to a A/B grade. Many of my students have had learning difficulties or additional support needs. I have also taught those with English as a second language.
My goal is always to improve my student's confidence and ensure they understand the exam structure. I focus on three main areas:
Reading for Understanding, Analysis and Evaluation: this involves improving critical reading, vocab and how the exam is graded. I break down each type of question and show students how these answers are a formula that they can apply to any paper.
Scottish text: this involves learning about themes, characterisation, and language devices specific to short stories, plays, novels etc. I help students to pick and analysis quotes and to improve their essay planning and writing.
Critical essay: This involves teaching the student to pick the right question and ensure they are answering it in line with the marking scheme. Students learn how to structure their essays and embed their quotes better.
Portfolio: I will work with the student from initial ideas, to creating a first draft and working towards a polished essay that will improve their overall grade.
Exam skills: this involves work around learning quotes, improving times and overall writing skills. This applies to both prelims and the main exam.

Thank you!
Keara has been great in helping my son upgrade from an English higher grade ‘C’ to an ‘A’. A structured approach; focussing on understanding what questions were being asked and how best to answer maximising potential for greater marks. The process has helped build his confidence and encouraged him to be more expressive. Thank you Keara.

Thank you Brian!
Keara is an excellent tutor! My son has mild Autism and struggles a lot with English. Keara is very patient and breaks down concepts/passages for Yosher to understand. Not only that, she goes above and beyond to create PowerPoints with notes to help Yosher to remember/understand. We only had Keara for 2 months before SQA National 5 English exams but she was a tremendous help to Yosher! We give her credit for Yosher's better than expected results from Fail at Prelim to C at SQA Finals! Thank you Keara! Yosher wouldn't have come so far without your guidance.

Thank you Janice- Yosher was a delight to teach and his hard work paid off.
Keara helped my son with his national 5 English. She came to the house and was very flexible with start times. She helped him go from a borderline pass to an A in the final exam. She was excellent at hints and methods in answering exam questions and made him feel more confident going into the exam. Thank you!

Thank you for the lovely feedback, Fiona.
Our son has really benefited from his time with Keara. Her calm nature means that he is able to learn and absorb the information that she is sharing with him. Keara is always well-prepared, and has provided lots of additional materials to help our son learn and retain the information that he needs for his Nat 5 English. His prelim grades have already shown an increase, and we anticipate that he will be well-prepared for his final exam in May. Thoroughly recommend.
