Tutor Profile

Paula

Private Psychology and Sociology Tutor in Dartford

I am an experienced, qualified teacher specialising in Psychology and Sociology at GCSE and A level. I am friendly, approachable and genuinely enjoy helping young people develop their confidence and achieve more than they may initially believe they are capable of.

Alongside teaching, I am currently training as a therapeutic counsellor. This has further developed my ability to listen carefully, build positive working relationships and understand the different factors that can affect a student’s learning and confidence.

I believe students learn best when they feel comfortable asking questions, admitting when they do not understand something and making mistakes without feeling judged. I aim to provide a supportive but purposeful environment in which students feel understood, encouraged and able to make progress.

Teaching Experience

I am a qualified teacher with extensive experience of teaching Psychology and Sociology at GCSE and A level. I currently teach both subjects in a secondary school and have experience working with students across a wide range of abilities, from those who need support with the basics to those aiming for the highest grades.

I have taught both OCR and AQA specifications and have a strong understanding of course content, assessment objectives and exam technique. I also work as an associate with AQA, which gives me a clear insight into how answers are marked and the common mistakes that prevent students from gaining higher marks.

Alongside classroom teaching, I have experience of one-to-one tutoring and supporting students who lack confidence, have gaps in their knowledge or find it difficult to turn their understanding into effective exam answers. My expereince is both face to face or online and I am happy with either.

Tutoring Approach

I see tutoring as a collaborative process between the student and myself. I begin by identifying the areas they find most challenging, whether this is subject knowledge, exam technique, confidence or organisation, and then develop a clear and manageable plan to address them.

During lessons, I explain content carefully, break difficult ideas into smaller steps and use examples to make them easier to understand. I then model how to approach exam questions before supporting the student in developing their own answers independently.

My approach is structured but flexible. I adapt lessons to the individual student rather than using the same method for everyone. I provide clear, honest feedback and aim to build both competence and confidence so that students become less reliant on support over time.
