Tutor Profile

Anna

Private Entrance Exams and German Tutor in Cambridge

I’m Anna, a recent Music graduate of Cambridge University (St Catharine’s College). Alongside my degree, I spent a year studying at Heidelberg Univeristy in Germany, where I studied music in German and achieved professional and conversational fluency. Before university, I went to Withington Girls’ School (consistently ranked as the top-performing indepedent school in the North West), achieving A*AA in my A levels and grade 9 in all nine of my GCSEs. I also studied music at the Junior Royal Northern College of Music and reached post grade 8 standard on recorder, piano, oboe, and music theory.

I am happy to teach online or within and around the centre of Cambridge.

Teaching Experience

I have experience teaching students of a wide range of ages and abilities through both classroom and workshop settings. As part of the Sing Inside programme, I led singing workshops in an NHS secure ward for adults, adapting activities to create an engaging and supportive learning environment. Through St Catharine's College Choir, I have also delivered singing, recorder and general music workshops in schools across Suffolk, China and Hong Kong, helping young musicians develop their confidence and musical skills. Alongside this, I have extensive experience coaching singers and instrumentalists as a Musical Director for opera productions, leading rehearsals, explaining musical concepts clearly, and helping performers improve both individually and as an ensemble. These roles have strengthened my ability to communicate complex ideas in an accessible way and to adapt my teaching to different learning styles. Although much of my experience has been in group teaching, I enjoy working closely with individual students to help them achieve their personal goals, whether that's preparing for exams, learning an instrument, improving music theory, or developing confidence in German.

Tutoring Approach

I have a very positive and interactive focus to teaching, so as to keep students engaged and enthusiastic, while achieving high standards. My first lesson will start with understanding where a student is currently and what they want to achieve. I'll identify which topics they already feel confident with, which they find difficult, and then build a plan to help them reach their goals. For music lessons, I combine the theoretical and practical knowledge so students understand the theory behind the music they are playing, which allows them to progress faster. I encourage students to bring their own opinions to the music and consider the feelings the music conveys, as well as having technical skills. For German language learning, I focus on speaking as well as writing abilites so the students feel confident using their language skills in real lfie situations. Alongside this, I’ll provide rigourous grammar lessons, so the students understand how the language is constructed. For academic subjects, I focus on breaking down the skills they’ll need for the qualification they are working towards (GCSE, 11+ entrance exams etc.), using the mark scheme to help them reach their full potential.
